16,000 VACANT BUILDINGS
837 METERS SQ. OF SPACE
4,088 HOMELESS PEOPLE

AND NO PLACE TO CALL
HOME ?
Project 837 came from the question of why 16,000 vacant buildings with an average of 214 square meter area cannot house 4088 homeless people in Baltimore City.  If we divide the total area of all the vacant buildings in Baltimore City by the number of homeless people found therein, we get the potential space (837 square meter or 9009 square feet) for one homeless person to live in.

Partnership with Project PLASE, a non-profit organization that provides essential housing and support service to homeless citizens in Baltimore, Project 837 is designed to start a conversation about the definition of home and homelessness.
By extending the concept of homeless, Project 837 will bring together different communities, such as immigrants, the elderly, and members of the international population who have lost their connections with their native communities. The three themes of exhibition are:  < Home as Occupying Space>, <Home as a Nostalgic Monument> and <Home: Diaspora of 'the others'>.
